Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
